New schedules and an additional train for VRE riders

The Virginia Railway Express is adding a new round-trip train to its growing Fredericksburg Line on Monday– the same day new schedules go into effect.

The additional service will boost capacity on the line that serves the I-95 corridor with stops in Woodbridge and Quantico before reaching Fredericksburg, and the newly-opened stop in Spotsylvania County.

“Our Fredericksburg Line riders have been requesting more commuter rail service for a long time and we’re pleased to deliver greater flexibility and travel choices in the I-95 corridor,” VRE’s chief executive officer Doug Allen said in a statement.

The new service comes just a couple of weeks after VRE opened the Spotsylvania station. It also coincides with the near completion of a third railroad track in the corridor, officials said.

Passengers who take the Fredericksburg Line will now have an additional morning and afternoon opportunity to travel between Spotsylvania and the District.  The additional train will add an average of about 780 additional seats each way.

VRE provides about 20,000 daily rides on the Fredericksburg and Manassas lines and it continues to see steady growth. An average of 550 boardings were recorded the first week of service at Spotsylvania, officials say. The commuter rail service also is studying the extension of the Manassas Line to Gainesville and Haymarket in Prince William County.

The addition of the Spotsylvania station earlier this month created some minor schedule adjustments. Riders on both lines should expect schedules changes starting Monday.
